Disabilities

Such a simple title for a difficult topic! In family life, the most critical and tricky times usually revolve around some type of disability. My family was no different. Both of my grandmothers have Diabetes. My aunt has Multiple Sclerosis. My mother has Fibromyalgia. My father, aunt and I have Dyslexia. Two of my cousins and I have Attentition Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder. I have two freinds with Cerebral Palsey (CP). And during a pregnancy scare I learned that my medication could result in Spina Bifida for the fetus (It was only a scare because of the medicine. My husband and I do want children.)

Before you get the wrong idea, I didn't give you this information to get your sympathy. I just wanted to let you know WHY I created this web page.

As a result of all these situations, I have developed a certain fondness for people who are "disabled". I have known people with M.D., Blindness, Deafness, Spinal Chord Injuries, and many, many more. From those who are physically and obviously disabled, I have learned many of life's greatest lessons. Sure, you hear them elsewhere, but when you meet a person who's life expectancy is 25 years because of the type of MD they have and they are 24 already, all of a sudden living each day to the fullest means much more.

There are also the "Ellens" of this world. Ellen was graduated from college at the age of 52 after 18 years of study! Not only that, but she is not able to communicate due to the severity of her CP. She first had to learn how to use a machine that would talk and write for her! She is a truely remarkable woman, and a wonderful writer (and thanks to the machine, orator). She has written hearfelt, tear-jerking speeches about the freedom she has as a result of the machine that talks for her.

I can't even begin to get into enough detail about any one disability, so I am going to supply a few links to help you on your journey into the world of Disabilities.
